Over the last 6 months the vision for Music3 has been shared one-on-one with as many music-industry insiders who would listen! It’s time to spill the beans on who they are and share some personal insights into the launch members, their partnering businesses, artists and advisors.

We’re giving you the inside scoop by releasing bios and interviews from the launch members, but remember; it’s you, your friends, your fans and favourite artists that will help make sure Web3 changes music forever.

Today we meet Joan Westenberg, Founder of Tech PR firm “Studio Self” and one of the leading Startup voices in Australia.

EDIT: Since bringing Joan on as an advisor she has been kicking-ass so hard that she is now a permanent team MODA Team member across marketing/community/NFT strategy and general degenerate genius-ness

Joan is a Web3 writer, angel investor and creative director. She founded a tech PR and communications firm called Studio Self, and is building Von, a branding consultancy. Joan is the winner of a platinum Hermes Award, and has been named as one of the leading Startup voices in Australia by Smart Company.

Joan’s writing has been published in The SF Chronicle, Wired, The AFR, The Observer, ABC, Junkee, SBS, Crikey and over 40+ publications. Her regular work can be found on Pizza Party, sharing notes on Web3, the metaverse and NFTs.

Joan created Transgenderinclusion.com, an open-source workplace inclusion hack, and I wrote a book called #DIY, a manifesto for indie creativity.

What do you love most about music?

I spent my teenage years playing in hardcore bands and hanging out at shows, and I grew a deep love for the way music brings people together around shared values and ideas. Years later, it still connects me to my community and my tribe, in a way that transcends language and unites us.

Over the years, what has frustrated you the most about the music business?

As a musician and as a fan, I’ve always been frustrated by the business model and the way it betrays and destroys indie and DIY ideals in favour of corporate interest. Of late, the business model has become so convoluted that it’s difficult for me to even understand what is “fair” or not. Making any money doing that is pretty much impossible unless you are willing to part with a huge chunk of your earning potential. That doesn’t work. And it can’t work.

Why are you excited about Web3 and MODA DAO?

I’m excited about giving music back to the creators. We are living in the potential of a creator economy. I like the idea of creators who can monetise their own content and reach out to audiences directly, without intermediaries. We haven’t yet seen what’s truly possible on the Internet. But MODA DAO is on the way there.
